Description
We are excited to present our new Grade 10 CPR Curriculum workshop! CPR and AED are essential life skills, and we are looking forward to educating your students in these critical skills.Â
We recommend 2 to 3 hours to cover the content, with time to practice with our CPR manikins and AED trainers. This could be done as one longer session, or over multiple sessions.Â
The required content (BC Government Curriculum) is:
- basic principles including:
- following safety guidelines
- having an emergency response plan
- knowing how to get help
- how to respond to a suspected overdose (e.g., perform CPR, use an AED, administer naloxone)
- what is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and what is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- what is a cardiac arrest and what can cause one (e.g., heart attacks, drowning, electrocution, airway obstruction, overdose)
- the ‘Chain of Survival’ and roles within this process (e.g., what is a student’s role in this process?)
- what is the bystander effect
- understanding the ‘4 Rs’ of CPR:
- Risk: factors in one’s life that can increase risk for heart disease (e.g., smoking, diet, lack of exercise, stress)
- Recognize: what to look for in a developing medical emergency (e.g., signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke)
- React: what to do in a medical emergency (e.g., identify hazards, call for help, call 911, direct someone to get an AED, be visible for paramedics)
- Resuscitate: how to perform CPR and how to use an AED
- understand the importance of an AED and know their placement and location in public places (e.g., where to find an AED in your school, community centre, sport centre)
- demonstrate the skills needed to perform CPR and operate an AED through the use of instructional strategies such as emergency care scenarios, role-play, and mock emergencies
- how to help someone who is choking through the use of the obstructed airway maneuver (also known as the Heimlich maneuver)

Participants will learn different leadership styles, and will utilize decision making models to solve mini case studies. The case studies will be catered to the age group of participants. Participants will also learn how to find resources in their community, and will identify appropriate resources for the characters in their mini cases. Finally, participants will learn how to recognize signs of stress and distress in themselves and others.Â
Length: 1-1.5 hours per module, 3 hours for both modules combined
*NEW* CardiacCrash
Suggested Audience: Grade 7+
This Heart & Stroke Foundation program is a dynamic, interactive, hands-on program which leads up to 40 participants through a true-to-life cardiac arrest simulation. The gamified approach promotes engagement and team building. Participants will learn how to manage a real-life cardiac arrest, through compression only CPR practice. Teams will compete to earn points, with a winning group being announced at the end of the session. This would be an excellent option as a follow-up to the Grade 10 CPR Curriculum Workshop, 60-90 days later, as a fun way to remember and practice the skills previously learned.
Length: 1 hour
